VOTE FOR VANNOY, CAMPAIGN WEEK 2 RECAP, CALL TO ACTION!

Its been another interesting week running for office. I set up my facebook/twitter page for my campaign. Thats "Roger Vannoy for WV House of Delegates district 42" on facebook, and on Twitter, its "@VannoyforWV." I also went to Beckley, WV to protest the Tax reform bill that is working its way through the US Congress. In case you haven't heard, its a tax break for all, but mostly for the wealthy. It will end up costing the US budget 1.5 trillion dollars and it will strip the ACA of its mandate, making the ACA unaffordable to many citizens. Millions of Americans could lose their health insurance. Also the Childrens Health Insurance Program (C.H.I.P.) was not reauthorized after it expired on September 30th. 9 million American children rely on C.H.I.P. for their health care, and Congress hasnt re-authorized it, because Congress isnt sure how to pay for the program. Which means that the Republican controlled U.S. Congress is perfectly willing to give money that we dont have to the wealthy, but funding C.H.I.P. is unaffordable. Its nice to know where their priorities are. So, I went to protest in Beckley with Womens March West Virginia, outside the offices of my Republican congressman, and my Republican Senator. It was good to exercise my freedom of speech in this manner. If enough of the American population were to speak out on these issues, maybe the final version of this tragic bill wont pass, and maybe C.H.I.P. could be re-authorized.

Also this week, I spoke with the owner/operators of the Irish Pub on Washington Street, and they have agreed to allow my campaign to host a trivia night. I'll have categories that are about important issues for West Virginia and some pop culture and general trivia categories. It will be January 25th and if you are able, come on out and have some fun. Also, bring canned food, if you can. We will make a donation to the local food pantry afterwards.

That was the second week of my campaign, I look forward to the third. If you are an American citizen, and are concerned about the state of healthcare in our country, if you dont think our government is doing enough to lift its citizens out of poverty, if you feel that our politicians are more worried about giving money to the wealthy than actually helping our citizens, as I do, then I urge you to run for office as well. America needs you.

VOTE FOR VANNOY, CAMPAIGN WEEK 1 RECAP. FIRED UP! READY TO GO!

I made my announcement last week that I was running for the West Virginia House of Delegates district 42 seat, and, the level of support and interest I received was overwhelming. Thank you to everyone who had a kind word of support and expressed interest. My blog tells me how many people read my posts. If I write a blog about any particular issue, I can hope for 50 views. I think with those 50 views, perhaps I showed some of my readers a view they haven't thought of before. Maybe I motivated someone to write to their congressman about a particular issue. My announcement blog has gotten well over a thousand views. I don't think that all of these people are excited about me running for office. Some are, and again, thank you. I wont let you down. Most, I think, are like me and are fed up with how our state and federal government is being run. I had a hunch that more people than ever are considering running for office, and wanted to see what I, or anyone, has to say about running for office. Turns out, it looks like I'm right. According to the VOX article below, there are 391 Democratic challengers running for the US House of Representatives who have raised at least 5 thousand dollars. There isn't a mid term year that even compares to this according to the article. I think Democrats are very excited for the 2018 election, and are putting their money where their mouth is. In my own election, there will be, I believe at least 4 people running in the Democratic primary for the 2 potential seats from the 42nd district. Last year, there was only one Democrat who ran. Democrats in 2017 are......... FIRED UP! READY TO GO! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AhRqg0ADbk&t=45s

On Sunday, my wife and I went to the Greenbrier County Democratic Executive Committee's annual Christmas party at Hill and Holler, a local restaurant. Where I met a lot of great people. Fellow Democrats who are ready to take back our country and state from the Republicans who only seem to work for the very wealthy. The Democrats at this party were excited to take back our country and state from the Republican politicians who put tax breaks for the wealthy over any kind of standard of decency.

While there I spoke with State Senator Stephen Baldwin who is running for re-election for West Virginia's 10th Senatorial district. Stephen is a preacher, all round nice guy and wants to improve quality of life for West Virginians. Here's a quote from his ballotopedia page
  • Ten years from now, I envision a state that is in the Top 10 for quality of life indicators. Our citizens are healthier because parents are not smoking around their children, we're choosing to exercise and eat well, & drugs are no longer the path of least resistance. Our population is educated because we enacted major reforms to put our dollars in classrooms to pay teachers significantly higher salaries and rebuild smaller community-based schools with health centers. This is truly the key to changing quality of life. When we build our human capital, as social scientists call it, we are primed for growth and development. Our economy is stable because it is diverse, buoyed by new small businesses in backyards and town shops. Our families are together because the kids no longer have to leave the state to find meaningful work. Our business climate is booming because companies want their employees to live, work, & play in Almost Heaven. A high quality of life leads to happier people who produce at higher levels for better pay. And all the while, the quaint West Virginia we all love with outdoor activities and starry skies is still available for us to enjoy...a little more sweetly now.
Senator Baldwin sponsored bills that would establish a Earned Income Tax Credit for low wage earners, reestablish the prevailing wage for skilled workers, to exempt industrial hemp from being classified as a schedule 1 drug, as wells as many more that you can look at by following the address https://ballotpedia.org/Stephen_Baldwin_Jr.
 or

While at the Greenbrier County Democratic executive committees Christmas party, I also met Huntington's mayor, Steve Williams, who is running for West Virginia's third Congressional district. The Mayor also has previous experience in the West Virginia State House of Delegates. He wants to diversify Southern West Virginia's economy, he states that Coal will always be important in West Virginia, but diversification is key. In April, Huntington won Americas best communities competition (https://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/huntington-wins-million-for-urban-development/article_a98dee60-de0e-535f-85f4-90c24944b534.html), which provided Huntington with 3 million dollars for city revitalization. To read the Mayor's announcement, use the address below. I think the Mayor likes this quote, as he uses it in the opening of the video address below "Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir mens blood." In the video, the Mayor speaks of what he will do with the three million dollars that Huntington has won. Watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tHrIxcEY8g

While speaking with some of the Democrats there, I learned about Act blue, a fundraising website for Democrats and the left. I haven't set up an account yet, but plan to. I also learned about campaign strategy, and there may be a campaign strategy class coming up. Which I will gladly go to.

I also spoke with the Democratic candidate for West Virginia's third congressional district in 2016, Matt Detch. He is a 2nd Lieutenant in the National Guard now, and I want to take this opportunity to say congratulations to Matt, and to say thank you for your service.

Thats all for now, I plan to continue these blog updates through the campaign. I know I'm going to stay FIRED UP! READY TO GO! You should too.

VOTE FOR VANNOY IN 2018

West Virginia is my home. It has been all my life, including when I was in the Marines for four years. I remember wherever I went in the service, I always missed the Appalachian mountains. I've been home for 14 years now, and West Virginia has been going through some tough times. The opioid crisis, the 2016 floods, the continual budget cuts, a nearly non-existent middle class, a coal industry that is doing marginally better but far from its peak, only four states pay teachers less at a time when we desperately need the most educated work force that we can have, we have a teacher shortage in our state topping 700 unfilled positions, in-state college education costs continue to climb, WV cant keep state employees because the pay is low, etc. etc. I wouldn't mind so much, that we had these problems, but it seems our Republican led state legislature has no interest in fixing any issue, other than getting rid of state income taxes. One year they reduce taxes, the next the year, the Republican leadership declares we don't have enough money, act surprised, and then cut budgets. Then they do it again. This past session in 2017 the Republican leadership in the state Legislature wanted to do away with the state income tax. That would have been devastating for the state of West Virginia. It would have given a tax break to the wealthy and would have increased taxes on everyone else. I have good news, there is an election in 2018, and we can make a change in leadership. The Republican leadership, Senator Carmichael in the state Senate and Speaker of the house Tim Armistead, have failed. They've had their chance, and they have failed to help the people of our state. Its time for new leadership, new voices with new ideas. Its time to elect a new generation of Democrats, and I have some ideas that I think can help, and may appeal to both Democrats and Republicans.

1.  We need to make the WV state budget the priority. Each of the last two legislative sessions have taken longer than they should have, costing the WV tax payer 1.45 million dollars. The state legislature should be able to get a budget done on time. We need new leaders who understand that this level of waste is a terrible thing.

2. WV's economy needs a boost. Our opioid epidemic continues. Recreational Marijuana can help with both. Colorado brought in an additional 150 million dollars in taxes on their more than 1 billion dollars in sales of legal marijuana in 2016. Legalizing marijuana has also lead to a decreased number of opioid deaths in Colorado. If the state legislature wont approve recreational marijuana, then there should be a referendum on the 2020 ballot. Let the people of WV decide.

3. Make hunting legal on Sundays just as it is the rest of the week. During the last session, hunting on private property was legalized on Sunday, but I think we can do more. This would help WV capitalize on hunting tourism to the tune of millions of dollars, and would help to reduce the deer population, which may help reduce car insurance in our state. I know that sounds strange, but its true. According to the state farm address below, WV is the state in which you are most likely to hit a deer, causing car insurance to go up.

4. WV should reduce income taxes on the working class, and make up the lost revenue with increased taxes on the wealthy. Even a small reduction on income taxes for the working class would be a step in the right direction. A tax break for the working class goes right back into our economy. Enacting the Earned Income Tax Credit would benefit the working class nicely.

5. Increase WV's minimum wage to $10 an hour. 123,000 workers in the state of WV would benefit from a increase to the states minimum wage. That's a lot of families with more income. Imagine what that kind of boost could do for our economy?  Real WV families with more money to spend. 25 percent of workers in Greenbrier county are low wage earners. They need a raise.

6. WV should protect its Medicaid funding. Right now, the program is to be funded with Excess funds. Medicaid funding should be a priority, it should be protected. Real lives depend on Medicaid, and the way the legislature "funded" Medicaid in 2017 is risky. 560,000 West Virginians rely on Medicaid, the government should protect them.

7. If WV legalizes recreational Marijuana, if we legalize hunting on Sundays, if we reduce the waste by not having the State legislature in extra sessions, and perhaps if we raise taxes on the wealthy, we should give our teachers and state employees a raise. If you want the best education for our children, and we do, then you need to pay our teachers like they're the best. We may then cut into our Teacher shortage. If you want the best at any position, you have to pay the employee well. Thats common sense.

8. Reduced sales tax on guns with built in trigger locks. Using trigger locks makes guns safer around children, and will potentially help to protect from theft. It may increase gun sales as well. If residents of border states realize certain guns are cheaper in WV, gun sales could go up.

9. Gun safety needs to be taught in our schools. Even if thats something as simple as sending kids home with a set of instructions on what to do if they come across a gun on accident, or showing kids this video from the NRA on what to do if they find a gun on accident ( https://eddieeagle.nra.org/) or making the hunter safety education course mandatory to high school students. I think we as a society could do better with Gun safety education. About 6,000 children in the USA are treated for a gun related injury, and 21 percent of those are accidents. We can do better.

10. WV should look into planting trees on reclaimed mine sites. Reclaimed mine sites, from what I've seen, look like fields, without trees. Without the trees there is more rain runoff from the mountains. With more runoff, its more likely to flood. Never mind that trees take in carbon and produce oxygen. Trees help with flood prevention and mitigation.

All of these ideas will help WV, but the most important idea that the WV state government needs to get on board with, is that compromise is key to governing effectively. Whenever either party has both sides of the legislature and the executive branch, they both think they can push through any idea that they want. Its not true. Governor Justice (R) has both the state house of delegates and the state Senate controlled by his fellow Republicans, but the Governor does not have a big legislative victory. The Governor dislikes the current budget so much that he refused to sign it. The only victory that he has attained was given to him by the people of WV, the roads bond. My fellow citizens, hyper-partisanship is not the way. To have a functioning government we all need to remember that compromising with others is necessary. Every day so many of us go to work, and work with others we may not always agree with, to complete our daily tasks. I'm ready to compromise with the other side for the greater good. So, in this upcoming election, vote for common sense interventions, vote for the candidate who is willing to compromise for the greater good, vote for me, Roger Vannoy. Democrat running for the house of delegates, 42 district in WV.

THE MOUNTAIN STATE MIDDLE MAN YEAR ONE REPORT CARD

Its hard to believe, but my blog has been going for over a year now. I wanted to take some time and see how we have done, making West Virginia/America a better place. I use "we", because without you, the reader, also engaging with your elected representatives, or more thoroughly researching political candidates, not nearly as much could have been accomplished. Of course, our efforts here can only claim a small portion of these victories, but, we did make our voices heard.

WINS

1. The West Virginia Roads bond passed. Hopefully this will bring economic prosperity to our state.
2. The West Virginia Republican party failed in repealing the State income tax. This would have put a burden on the middle class that we would not have been able to survive.
3. President Trumps first travel ban was rejected by the court system. It unconstitutionally favored Christianity over other religions.
4. President Trump has not pulled the USA out of NAFTA, yet.
5. 5 candidates from the 2016 campaign that this website backed, won their election. That's not a lot, but, hey, it was a bad year for centrist candidates. One of those candidates, State Senator Ojeda, was the leading voice in getting Medical Marijuana passed for our state citizens. Couldnt be prouder. Good job sir!
6. UMWA retired coal miners got their health care secured by congress.
7. The Russia Sanctions review act passed. It had to change names but it says, amongst other things: "The President must submit for congressional review certain proposed actions to terminate or waive sanctions with respect to the Russian Federation."
8. General Mattis did become Secretary of Defense (and we all breathed a sigh of relief, just think if Steve Bannon was the Secretary of Defense).
9. Marine Le Pen did lose the Presidential election in France, YEAH SHE DID! TAKE THAT POPULISM! Yes, people from France did read that blog. Yes, I'm taking all the credit on this one. Joking, of course.

LOSSES

1. All but five of the candidates this website backed, lost.
2. Governor Justice refused to remove Stonewall Jacksons statue from the capitol building grounds. The man fought for Virginia against West Virginia. Seems like a no brainer to me.

THE JURY IS STILL OUT

1. UMWA retired coal miner pensions are not secured yet, but its not over yet.
2. I haven't seen a set of gun safety laws that makes the populace safer, but doesn't restrict rights. I'm still hopeful. Maybe during the next West Virgina legislative session.
3. I havent seen any new initiatives in WV to help the environment and protect our citizens from flooding, but maybe there will be something done in the next session.
4. Illegal immigrant Veterans of the US armed forces are still being deported. I just wrote that one, though, so, it deserves more time.
5. I don't know if Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas still thinks Water boarding isn't torture. He never wrote me back. Though, after google searching Tom Cotton and water boarding, I came up with nothing. So maybe hes just not talking about it anymore, which is also good.

As I've said, we cant take all the credit. We cant take much credit for the wins or the losses. However, if you, like me, made your voices heard by calling or writing to your representatives in congress/state legislatures regarding these issues, you can say that you have made a difference. You tried to make your state/country/world a better place. Thank you.

BANISHED VETERANS

Happy Veterans day. Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day In that respect, I want to discuss our countries deported/Banished Veterans.

If you are unaware, illegal immigrants can join the US armed forces. They can go and fight for our country, for our citizens. When they come home, if they havent already become a citizen, they can then be deported. (See the NPR/PRI/NEWSWEEK/CHICAGO TRIBUNE address below for more stories about indivduals that this has happened to. This story has been told by writers better than myself. I encourage you to read the articles listed below, and then write to your reprsentatives in congress.)This does happen, and it happens more often than perhaps you would think. According to the deported veterans support house in Tijuana Mexico, they have come in contact with 100 deported veterans. That may not seem like a lot, but thats 100 times the US government has committed an egregious error. According to the PRI address below, there are about 11,000 non citizen soldiers/Marines/sailors/airmen serving in the armed forces today. If these illegal immigrant veterans did commit a crime, then they should do the time. IN AMERICA. Veterans should be allowed in to the US. These individuals put their lives on the line for us, I think the USA can do a little paperwork for them.

If you agree with me, that Deported/Banished Veterans should be allowed back in to the United States, that illegal immigrants currently serving in the US armed forces should be helped to become citizens now, then I encourage you to call or write your Representatives/Senators in the US congress, and tell them to support the "Veterans Visa and Protection Act of 2017." Its copied and pasted below.

Veterans Visa and Protection Act of 2017

This bill requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to: (1) establish a program to permit eligible deported noncitizen veterans to enter the United States as, and to permit eligible noncitizen veterans in the United States to adjust their status to that of, a noncitizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence; and (2) cancel the removal of eligible noncitizen veterans and allow them to similarly adjust their status.
An "eligible" veteran is a veteran who: (1) was not ordered removed, or removed, from the United States due to a criminal conviction for a crime of violence or for a crime that endangers U.S. national security for which the noncitizen served at least five years' imprisonment; and (2) is not inadmissible to, or deportable from, the United States due to such a conviction. DHS may waive such eligibility requirements for humanitarian purposes, to assure family unity, due to exceptional service in the U.S. Armed Forces, or if such waiver otherwise is in the public interest.
A noncitizen veteran or service member shall not be removed from the United States unless he or she has a criminal conviction for a crime of violence.
A noncitizen who has obtained the status of a noncitizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence under this bill shall be eligible for naturalization through service in the U.S. Armed Forces, except that: (1) the grounds on which the noncitizen was ordered removed from, or rendered inadmissible to or deportable from, the United States shall be disregarded when determining whether the noncitizen is a person of good moral character; and (2) any period of absence from the United States due to the noncitizen having been removed or being inadmissible shall be disregarded when determining if the noncitizen satisfies any requirement relating to continuous residence or physical presence.
A noncitizen who has obtained the status of a noncitizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence under this bill shall be eligible for all military and veterans benefits for which the individual would have been eligible if he or she had never been been removed from, or voluntarily departed, the United States.
DHS shall: (1) identify cases involving service members and veterans at risk of removal from the United States, and (2) annotate all DHS immigration and naturalization records relating to any noncitizen involved and afford an opportunity to track the outcome.
After working on this blog, I sent emails to my representatives in the federal Government. So far, Senator Shelly Moore Capito is the only one to respond. The following is her response.

November 15, 2017
Dear Mr. Vannoy,
Thank you for contacting me regarding Department of Defense (DoD) military policies; it was good to hear from you and I appreciate the opportunity to learn your views on this issue.
As you may know, in November of 2008, Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates authorized the enactment of the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI) program, which allowed non-citizens living in the United States to join the military. Immigrants who participated in MAVNI were provided an expedited path towards obtain U.S. citizenship. The MAVNI program was not renewed for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, but those who were previously recruited have continued to serve.
The DoD is currently reviewing the program, and is expected to release a decision on the status of the program in the upcoming weeks. Should any relevant legislation come before the full Senate for a vote, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.
Again, thank you for contacting me.  I look forward to hearing from you again soon and invite you to visit my website, www.capito.senate.gov, for further information and to sign up for my e-mail newsletter.  It is an honor to serve you.
Sincerely,
Shelley Moore Capito
United States Senator

The Senator's response leaves much to be desired. She talks about what was tried to help the problem, and how it no longer applies, but it may apply again in the future. She does not however put anything forward herself to try and fix the problem of Veterans who are illegal immigrants getting deported. As mentioned before, there is a bill in the House of Representatives right now that could fix the problem. She could put that bill in the Senate as well. I think our Veterans deserve better treatment than this. Its unfortunate that this was her response, because I know that if one of these Veterans had family who lived in her state, I think she would do more. Senator Capito in the past has helped me personally deal with the VA (I'm a Veteran). I hope she changes her mind and does more.

COMPROMISE IS THE ART OF THE DEAL, PART 2: ABORTION.

When elections are on the horizon, there are a few issues that never fail to show up. They split us right down the middle, Democrat or Republican. Often, these issues are not the most important issues that we have to deal with, but we are so dug into our side, that we have the potential to make POOR CHOICES on who to elect to high office. Important issues like the economy, war, nuclear proliferation, the environment, education, infrastructure, etc. etc. are not being talked about as much as they should. So, what I want to do is to help find the middle ground on these partisan issues, promote the middle ground, and maybe we, as a society, can AVOID PUTTING TERRIBLE PEOPLE IN CHARGE. Next up, ABORTION.

A.     The pro choice stance, as I see it. Pro choice people believe that if a woman becomes pregnant, and she doesn't think she is ready to have a child/is not financially stable enough to have a child/if she doesn't have a stable home for a child/if the child was conceived in unfortunate circumstances etc. etc., then the woman should have a choice, of whether to go through with the pregnancy or not. There are of course, other more unfortunate instances when, late during a pregnancy, it may be discovered that the fetus may be disfigured in some way, that makes survival outside the womb unlikely. Then the woman may choose to end the pregnancy. Just to make clear, I am not a doctor, this is just how I see it. Also, of course there are other scenarios I havent listed here.

The anti abortion stance, as I see it. Life starts at conception. All life is sacred, so, pregnancies should never be aborted. There are ofcourse some who would moderate their stance and say except in certain cases, such as rape, incest or if the life of the mother is in danger.

B.      So, why should anyone consider changing their long held beliefs? Consider who is in the White House now, and how he got there.

"Exit polls show white evangelical voters voted in high numbers for Donald Trump, 80-16 percent, according to exit poll results. That’s the most they have voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 2004, when they overwhelmingly chose President George W. Bush by a margin of 78-21 percent. Their support for Trump will likely be seen as part of the reason the GOP candidate performed unexpectedly well in Tuesday’s election, according to Five Thirty Eight." -https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2016/11/09/exit-polls-show-white-evangelicals-voted-overwhelmingly-for-donald-trump/?utm_term=.edac34753497

Trump’s embrace by these groups might signal the importance of abortion—an issue on which at least a fifth of Americans say they will not compromise when voting. .......Seven in 10 voters on Tuesday said the next president’s appointment of a new Supreme Court justice was an important factor—presumably because this judge could have a decisive vote in cases involving abortion and other social issues. Voters “were mobilized by what’s at stake & the clear contrast w/Hillary on life,”Family Research Council president Tony Perkins tweeted late Tuesday.  -https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/11/why-women-and-christians-backed-trump/507176/

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/11/why-women-and-christians-backed-trump/507176/

That last one was to just hammer the point home, that supporting the choice, does not mean that a candidate will have the "womans vote." However, a fifth of Americans will not compromise their stance on this issue. Some of these people are just as horrified at President Trumps bad behavior as the rest of us, but cannot vote for a pro choice candidate. Thats how seriously they believe that their anti-abortion stance is correct.   So, its time for political candidates with a respect for these voters views, or we could risk re-electing Donald Trump as President in 2020. A President Trump who risks Nuclear war with North Korea, who wants to repeal Obamacare even if that means stripping healthcare from millions of Americans, who wants to give a giant tax break to the wealthy even if it means America's deficit grows by leaps and bounds, who doesn't believe in climate change and his energy/environmental policies will cause more Hurricane Harvey's. Its time the pro choice Americans take the danger that President Trump poses to America seriously, and compromise with the anti abortion Americans.  Anti-abortion Americans, who you may not agree with, are doing what they think is right. Lets see what we can do to try and help them find a way to not vote for President Trump and the far right in this next election.

C. The Compromise.
Right now, there is a bill before the Senate, The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The name is a bit misleading, The bill, sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), would ban abortions after 20 weeks nationwide, except in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the life of the mother. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/03/politics/house-vote-abortion-after-20-week-ban/index.html
https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/10/3/16401826/abortion-ban-pain-capable-unborn-child-protection-act

1. I think another exception needs to be added. Abortion for of mercy for the disfigured fetus that could not survive outside the womb, or would lead a kind of life no one should have to suffer through. Heres a article on just this kind of story. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/31/16229654/abortion-insurance-hyde-amendment. The Hyde amendment should be adjusted as well. Whats the Hyde amendment? -
The Hyde Amendment bans the use of federal Medicaid funding to pay for abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the mother’s life; 32 states have similar restrictions on state Medicaid funds. Meanwhile, 26 states restrict abortion coverage in private plans offered on the insurance exchanges, and 11 restrict abortion coverage in all private plans.

Nearly 99 percent of abortions occur before 21 weeks, but when they are needed later in pregnancy, it’s often in very complex circumstances. https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/issues/abortion/20-week-bans
For more on those "complex circumstances" use the address above for planned parenthood. There are some stories there that really illustrate why late term abortions should be legal.

2. If we as a society want to reduce abortions, we need to strengthen our prevention effort. You are not going to stop people from having sex. If the idea that some of these people are going to later have an abortion is abhorrent to you, then we, as a society, need to help prevent pregnancies. Abstinence only DOES NOT WORK. Thats why insurance companies should have to provide support for birth control. Free condoms should be provided in high schools/colleges/health departments. Sex education in high schools should be a class that is difficult, and you have to get a B in to pass.

3. This isnt an all inclusive list. The main thing we should do as Americans, is respect each other, and our opinions. If we have to agree to disagree, so be it. We should work on the goal of making abortion safe, legal and rarely needed by reducing the amount of unwanted pregnancies with birth control/education. When abortion is needed, we shouldnt shame the women who go through with it.

I want to say thanks to the websites where I obtained by information. Thank you to Planned parenthood, the Washington Post, CNN, the atlantic and VOX.

COMPROMISE IS THE ART OF THE DEAL, PART 1: GUNS

When elections are on the horizon, there are a few issues that never fail to show up. They split us right down the middle, Democrat or Republican. Often, these issues are not the most important issues that we have to deal with, but we are so dug into our side, that we make no headway, and are distracted from more important items. Important issues like the economy, war, nuclear proliferation, the environment, education, infrastructure, etc. etc. are not being talked about as much as they should. So, what I want to do today is to help find the middle ground on these partisan issues, promote the middle ground, and maybe we, as a society, can move on to the big ticket items, at least for a bit. First up, GUNS.

     A, lets establish the problem.

1. "a study based on data from 2012 to 2014 suggests that, on average, 5,790 children in the United States receive medical treatment in an emergency room each year for a gun-related injury. About 21% of those injuries are unintentional, .......
From 2012 to 2014, on average, 1,297 children died annually from a gun-related injury in the US, according to the study, published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday." - http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/19/health/child-gun-violence-study/index.html
2. "When Americans think about deaths from guns, we tend to focus on homicides. But the problem of gun suicide is inescapable: More than 60 percent of people in this country who die from guns die by suicide."- https://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/09/upshot/gun-deaths-are-mostly-suicides.html
3. Privately owned firearms are stolen in America with alarming frequency: between 300,000 and 600,000 every year, according to a new survey of gun ownership by researchers at Harvard and Northeastern universities. - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/sep/21/gun-theft-us-firearm-survey
4. Mass killings in the United States are most often carried out with guns, usually handguns, most of them obtained legally. 948 victims. Each gun was used to kill an average of three people, not counting shooters. The 948 people came from nearly every imaginable race, religion and socioeconomic background, and 145 were children or teenagers. -https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/mass-shootings-in-america/

B, establish the conflict between left and right.

THE REPUBLICAN VIEW

"We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a natural inalienable right that predates the Constitution and is secured by the Second Amendment. Lawful gun ownership enables Americans to exercise their God-given right of self-defense for the safety of their homes, their loved ones, and their communities.
We salute the Republican Congress for defending the right to keep and bear arms by preventing the President from installing a new liberal majority on the Supreme Court. The confirmation to the Court of additional anti-gun justices would eviscerate the Second Amendment’s fundamental protections. Already, local officials in the nation’s capital and elsewhere are defying the Court’s decisions upholding an individual right to bear arms as affirmed by the Supreme Court in Heller and McDonald. We support firearm reciprocity legislation to recognize the right of law-abiding Americans to carry firearms to protect themselves and their families in all 50 states. We support constitutional carry statutes and salute the states that have passed them. We oppose ill-conceived laws that would restrict magazine capacity or ban the sale of the most popular and common modern rifle. We also oppose any effort to deprive individuals of their right to keep and bear arms without due process of law.
We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and the current Administration’s illegal harassment of firearm dealers. We oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners, registration of ammunition, and restoration of the ill-fated Clinton gun ban."- https://www.gop.com/platform/we-the-people/

THE DEMOCRATIC VIEW

Preventing Gun Violence

With 33,000 Americans dying every year, Democrats believe that we must finally take sensible action to address gun violence. While responsible gun ownership is part of the fabric of many communities, too many families in America have suffered from gun violence. We can respect the rights of responsible gun owners while keeping our communities safe. To build on the success of the lifesaving Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, we will expand and strengthen background checks and close dangerous loopholes in our current laws; repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) to revoke the dangerous legal immunity protections gun makers and sellers now enjoy; and keep weapons of war—such as assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines (LCAM's)—off our streets. We will fight back against attempts to make it harder for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to revoke federal licenses from law breaking gun dealers, and ensure guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists, intimate partner abusers, other violent criminals, and those with severe mental health issues. There is insufficient research on effective gun prevention policies, which is why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must have the resources it needs to study gun violence as a public health issue.

C. Lets establish some potential solutions, while respecting both sides.
So, you can see the conflict. Now, here is a middle ground plan, that I have to help reduce the problem of gun related deaths/accidents (the Democratic aim) while respecting gun ownership and the rights of individuals (the Republican aim).
1. Reduce the sales taxes on guns that have built in trigger locks, or come with a trigger lock separately. The point here is to protect your children from gaining access to guns in your home. The non-built in trigger locks can be removed, so they wont always protect your guns from being stolen, but, they will help with prevention of accidental shootings. All things being equal, if there are two guns of the same quality, but one is cheaper due to the sales tax being reduced, most people will go with the cheaper gun. This does come with a cost to state revenue, but well worth it. It would be up to the individual to utilize the trigger lock. I think this measure would save some lives.
2. Educate children about guns. If you have little ones in your house, the NRA has a video you might want to look into. I just watched, and will have my little girl watch it soon. Here it is, Eddie Eagle - https://eddieeagle.nra.org/. I also think that there could be firearm education day in schools, particularly middle school and High school from a state trooper that comes in for a day to talk to the students about proper firearm safety. Such as, you never point a firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot, you always must be aware of where your firearm is pointing. Also, Leave the safety on, and your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to shoot. That sort of thing. Having a state trooper teach a class will lend authority to the class. That would cost money, but well worth it.  - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2017/05/02/firearm-education-could-save-kids-lives/?utm_term=.295e85715a62
3. Mental illness and guns should not mix, but at times, they do unfortunately. If we want to prevent gun homicides and suicides that are related to mental illness, then we must protect/bolster our health care system already in place. Medicare/Medicaid/Obamacare cannot afford any cuts, and should be improved. Less healthcare = a less mentally healthy population.

D. Conclusion.

If you think there are many middle ground solutions to gun violence/accidents, email your congressman/Senator/your representatives in the state legislature, tell them to make some common sense decisions to save lives, regarding gun safety. Feel free to use some of the ideas listed here, or just tell them to do something, anything, to help solve the gun safety problem we have in our communities, our state, our country.

P.S.

I sent an email to my representatives in the West Virginia State Legislature:

To the honorable Delegate Ambler,

In 2015, 141 children in America were killed by unintentional gun discharges according to the USA today link below. This number is far too high, and I think West Virginia can do more to protect our children, while respecting the 2nd amendment.  1. We could offer state sales tax breaks for guns equipped with a trigger lock built into the gun. All things being equal, I would buy the cheaper gun. This would cost revenue, but if the trigger lock were used by the owner, it may prevent some accidental discharges. It might even save some lives. 2. I think gun safety education could be taught in schools. There is a link to the NRAs website that has a child education video that tells kids what to do if they should find a gun. Its about 8 minutes long. Maybe, this, or some other education could be taught to children to not play with guns.

Recently, an 11 year old boy brought a loaded gun to Winfield Middle school. See the link below for more details. The lack of gun safety in our state/country is a problem, and I would like to see something done about it. I dont care what, just something, an attempt. Thank you for your time.

-Roger Vannoy

I received an interesting response from Delegate Ambler, here it is:

Mr. Vannoy,
Thank you  for sharing your concern on gun safety. I share your concern that children, and adults, are not given instructions about gun safety in and around the home. I support the 2nd amendment even though I have some reservations with recent law changes in our state. I support the attempts of various groups, such as the NRA,to make people aware of gun safety. However, without proper instruction we allow anyone to buy a firearm at age 21 and thus to have them in their households where it might be difficult to teach their children gun safety when they have had no safety taught to them. Our Department of Natural Resources is making every attempt to have hunter safety courses to be taught in our area schools and are having several degrees of success. I think the DNR is attempting to get the State Superintend of Schools to mandate hunter education to be taught in our schools yearly. As you are aware gun safety is a major component of this program. This might be one way to get the proper gun safety started. I will chat with others on this issue and we will see where this leads. Have a great day!
George Boogie Ambler

I applaud Delegate Ambler's idea on mandated hunter education in schools. I hope he can help make that happen. This solution will not solve all the gun accidents that we have today, but I believe that the number would fall, and thats the idea. To keep striving to make life better for West Virginians and all Americans. The effort is what counts.

ITS TIME TO STOP HONORING THE CONFEDERACY

Everyone has heard about the terrorist attack in Charlottesville, VA, where Neo Nazis and the KKK were protesting that cities decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Lee. I applaud Charlottesville's decision to remove that statue, and West Virginia should remove the statue of General Jackson on the Capitol grounds as well. Heres why:

     1. All the officers in the Confederate Army, who left the US Army, broke their oaths to the United States of America. They betrayed their country in order to defend the institution of slavery, the biggest stain on American history, and killed American soldiers, sailors and Marines, 642,427 courageous men fighting for their country to be exact. See the national parks service address for more. According to Esquire magazine, the following is the oath that all graduating West Point cadets swear to when becoming a US Army officer prior to the Civil War: "In 1836, he (General Lee and General Jackson later) went to West Point, to become an Army officer. He graduated, twelfth in his class in 1840. The oath he swore went like this: "I, _____, appointed a _____ in the Army of the United States, do solemnly swear, or affirm, that I will bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, and observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the rules and articles for the government of the Armies of the United States." These US Army officers who became Confederate Officers ARE TRAITORS AND OATH BREAKERS. They do not deserve a statue or place of honor. For more on how these Confederate officers are traitors, use the esquire address below and read more.

     2. I've already mentioned point 2, but here I'm going to reiterate, these traitors defended slavery. Defending slavery = evil. They do not deserve a statue, or a place of honor. They certainly dont deserve to have schools named after them (I'm looking at you Stonewall Jackson Middle school.) This point seems like a no-brainer, but this particular point gets glossed over by people who want to fly the Confederate flag, and by many of those who support the statues. Nobody wants to think of their heroes as evil, but if you look up to these traitors, its true. More on this glossing over later. If you have questions regarding how bad slavery can be, I personally thought that the book "12 years a slave" was amazing/horrific. Its also a movie, you can rent it on Amazon.com. I dont think I should have to explain how bad slavery was, and am not sure that the confines of this blog article would do it justice. Theres also a museum in D.C. , the National Museum of African History and Culture, that you can go to. I havent yet, but the next time I'm in D.C., I'm going to. See the address below for more.

So, we've established that these statues should come down, but, often, people will say what good will it do? You cant change the past. Its true, you cant change the past. We can help effect the future. Imagine you are African American, growing up in America. What must it be like to see these evil men, who wanted to keep you a slave, celebrated with statues, and parks/streets/military bases/schools named after them? I would imagine it would make some people feel like a foreigner in a strange land. As though, the country did not care for you. As if you were alienated in the country in which you were born (maybe thats why the statues are there?). If we truly want to have equal rights amongst all of our citizens, then we have to start looking like we are equal (taking the statues down), then after that maybe we can act equal (incarceration rates differ amongst races, thats a problem) and after that, maybe we can BE a society that treats its citizens equal. Now, this is not the final step towards equality. After the 13th amendment passed, the slaves were freed. Thats great, but ofcourse, African Americans were far from being treated equally as other white citizens. Then came the 15th amendment, and African American men were allowed to vote. Then came the 19th amendment and women are allowed to vote. Then in the 60s the civil rights movement. We are getting closer all the time to equality, and removing these statues/confederate flag/confederate names from our society is next in line.  “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” - MLK jr.

I have said here in this article that the confederacy was an evil thing, but you should not equate that evil with the people, the citizens who fly the confederate flag today, or who support the keeping of these statues (ofcourse the neo nazis and KKK are evil, but the majority of people arent). I have to make a full disclosure here, there was a not so distant time in my life, where I had these misguided views on the confederacy. I, like these others, thought that General Lee and General Jackson weren't really that bad, and they only supported their states, not slavery, etc. etc. Why did I feel this way? I had done some family genealogical research and found that one of my ancestors had fought for the south. I thought that surely my family couldnt have fought for the wrong side, the side that fought for slavery? So, I convinced myself that the confederacy was alright. That it wasnt as bad as all that. We can fool ourselves into believing a lot of things. Our culture doesnt exactly help, as a kid I loved the Dukes of Hazard, their car was called the General Lee and had a rebel flag on it! Surely the Duke boys werent bad. If you've ever read any of Jeff Shaara's books on the civil war, or any of the movies based on those books, you wouldnt know who the true villains are. Slavery is hardly mentioned. (you shouldnt blame Jeff Shaara or the Duke boys either) Southern culture completely separates the cause of the Civil War (slavery) and its military exploits. Why? I think its a feeling of guilt, that the south has suppressed, that has followed the south for generations. Just my opinion though.
I would go to different civil war battlefields and spend hours there trying to figure out if my ancestors unit was there (36th Virginia Infantry). Until one day, I went to Manassas battlefield, and was reading about how the US Marines had fought there, and some had died. I'm a Marine veteran myself, and I do cherish all those who serve, not just Marines, but this particular battlefield had a real effect on me. This brought up a truth that I had been suppressing, you cant gloss over the atrocity that was the confederacy forever. I dont know why my ancestor fought for the Confederacy, but it doesnt matter, he fought to defend slavery, whether or not that was his motivation, and he was wrong to do so. Eventually, I sold many of my books on the civil war, the ones who glorified the war and glossed over the causes. I took down my General Lee trinkets, and I realized my error. A lot of my fellow West Virginians feel the same way that I used to, as do many others from other southern states. Again, I dont think you could call the Rebel flag/statue supporters all racist. I hope that more people who are under the romanticized illusion of the confederacy will realize their mistake one day. Maybe, through polite conversation, others can help these misguided individuals to find the truth.

What can be done? How can you help make West Virginia/America a little bit closer to a society that behaves like it believes in equality for all? One small way is to sign this petition here https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/gov-justice-remove-slaveowner-statue-from-capitol-grounds Its a petition to remove Stonewall Jackson statue from the West Virginia capitol grounds. I did some light background check, it seems be legit. You can also either email, or call our representatives in the US Congress/WV Legislature and ask them to remove these statues to men who dont deserve the honor. Look at the picture below, its like we have a statue to Darth Vader.

Also, just a word of caution, DONT TEAR THESE STATUES DOWN YOURSELF! Thats dangerous, you could hurt yourself or others, and you will likely be arrested. See the CNN link below for more.
